In 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm first published their collection of old tales. Devoutly Christian, the brothers believed that "fairy tales are survivals of an ancient faith that goes back to the earliest times, a faith which is expressed in the pictorial representations of things that go beyond the senses." (The Owl, the Raven and the Dove" by G Ronald Murphy, Oxford, 2000, p. 20)
