The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias the priest, and told him that his wife Elizabeth would bear a son in her old age. The son would be called John, and he would prepare the way of the Lord. The miracle of Christmas, of the Lord being born into the world and into our hearts, does not simply happen on its own; we need to prepare for it, and John the Baptist can show us the way.
