  • Living Gratefully

    Doctrinal Class - 30 Sep, 2015

A seven class series on the five laws of Providence. 1) Introduction. 2) Freedom: We have freedom to choose our own actions. Whatever seems reasonable to us (see DP 71-99). 3) Change: When we change the external negative behaviors that we are aware of, God takes care of the deeper issues that we are not aware of (DP 100-128). 4) Love: We can't be forced to love or believe anything that we don't want to love or believe. We can only compel ourselves - not others. (DP 129-153). 5) Enlightenment: We are inspired and led by God through teachings from the Word. (DP 154-174). 6) Trust: We cannot see providence in action, but only in retrospect.(DP 175-190). 7) Review | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell , Bryn Athyn Cairnwood Village

  • The Lord's Purpose

Worship Service: Sermon only - 27 Sep, 2015

Our "Living Gratefully" series focuses on the five laws of Providence, asking us to see the ways the Lord governs and guides us as gifts that we can be grateful for. What was the Lord's underlying purpose in giving us these laws. Knowing why He leads us helps us understand how He does so, and helps us understand what we can do to gratefully respond to his leading. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss , Bryn Athyn Cathedral

  • Don't Beat Yourself Up

Sometimes we judge ourselves more harshly than the Lord does. Remember He says, "My yoke is easy, and My burden is light." | By Rev. Garry B Walsh , Phoenix, AZ

  • Gideon Part 1 - Weakness and Strength – You Mighty Man of Valour

Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - 9 Aug, 2015

This week we begin a three-week series on the story of Gideon, one of the Judges of Israel. This week, we hear about his startling call: an angel appeared to him, called him a mighty man of valour, and told him he would rescue Israel from their enemies. The problem? Gideon was the youngest son in an unimportant family, and didn't feel much like a mighty man at all. And yet - God chose him to conquer the enemy. In our own lives: how does God transform our weakness into power? How can we see ourselves as mighty men and women of valour when we know from experience just how weak we are? | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn , Westville, RSA

  • Those Who Are With Us

Worship Service: Sermon only - 2 Aug, 2015

The prophet Elisha and his servant were surrounded by a huge enemy army. It seemed hopeless - until Elisha prayed to the Lord and the servant's eyes were opened to see the angelic army that vastly outnumbered the enemy. When we feel alone, how can our eyes be opened to the reality that "those who are with us are more than those who are against us"? | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn , Westville, RSA

Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - 21 Jun, 2015

As we've talked about for the last few weeks, in the New Church we believe this prophecy has been fulfilled and is continuing to be fulfilled. But where is that new heaven? Where is that new earth? And what does it mean to live within the walls of the Holy City? | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn , Westville, RSA

"You're absolutely worthless!" "I'm a useless piece of..." Do you ever hear these words--from other people or inside your own head? Are they true? Are you worthless? Or think about it the other way: if you are not worthless, why do you have worth? What makes you worthy? It's tricky to sort out. And dealing with feelings of worthlessness is even harder. • Do Not Resist Evil 1– Dealing With Doubt

Worship Service: Sermon only - 9 Nov, 2014

When we are attacked by feelings of doubt, shame, fear, or worthlessness, we often try to simply push those feelings away. It usually doesn’t work. But there is another way: instead of resisting these things, we can let ourselves experience them. We can even see what is valuable in them, and let the rest pass on by. This week, the first in a four-part series, we will focus specifically on how to do this with doubt. From our mundane doubts about that day's decisions, to the big doubts about God and the purpose of life - how do we honestly face our doubts without being overwhelmed by them? | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn , Westville, RSA

  • Amos–The Word of a Prophet 4 – Promise of Blessings to Come

Worship Service: Sermon only - 19 Oct, 2014

After all the threats of destruction throughout the book of Amos, the prophecy ends on a hopeful note: the promise of a return to a fruitful land. Is this promise being made to us? And if so, what was the purpose of all the threats of destruction that came before? We’re wrapping up our series on the book of Amos and continuing to grapple with the question of how we can hear the Lord speaking to us today through the ancient, sometimes obscure prophecies recorded in the Bible. | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn , Westville, RSA
